Spring Paddling

5 Reasons to Start Paddling in Spring

Each paddling location has its on unique weather pattern.

In Double Bay, the weather pattern is such, that conditions are often calmer and easier, particularly for beginners in Spring than Summer.

Some of the reasons are:

  1. The water is clearer and cleaner

The water in the bay and the harbour generally is so much clearer in winter and spring. At this time of year it is often clear enough to see the sand on the bottom.

  2. No seaweed

Double Bay Beach is a white, sandy paradise in Winter and the first part of Spring. Come summer the beach and the shoreline can often be scattered with seaweed. You might even need to wade through murky seaweed on the shoreline to launch your board.

  3. Calmer, flatter waters

Calm, flat water makes for easier paddling.

  4. Less wind and swell

Swell and wind make the water ‘choppier’ and paddling more challenging. In summer, particularly from mid morning to late afternoon it can be consistently windy. This can mean battling a headwind or paddling on one side to combat a strong wind.

  5. Less boat traffic

Paddling is definitely more relaxing when there are fewer boats on the harbour. It means there is less boat wake to contend with and you don’t need to be on your guard quite as much, looking out for boats.

You can think less and enjoy more!
